Do you ever wish you had a glimpse into other people’s days? I often wonder how people spend their time and get things done, especially other entrepreneurs. Everyone has their own daily routine that works for them and that includes me.
One thing that I’ve had to learn over the past few months is that life happens and my plan for the day won’t always (or even usually) go as planned. I’m learning flexibility. Nonetheless, I thought it would be fun to share a little peek at my day and how I spend my time. On a good day, it goes something like this…
Around 6:00 AM I wake up and check my Facebook while my coffee is brewing. I don’t give my emails too hard a look at this point because I’m still too sleepy to deal with people, but I go through and delete the spam and social media notification emails so they’re out of the way when I’m ready to handle my inbox.
I make sure all the animals have fresh food and water. We have two lovebirds, three rats, a dog, two cats, and a ferret – there are a lot of mouths to feed at our house! I take care of everyone and say good morning.
One thing that has really been missing from my mornings lately is my spiritual practice. I was not sleeping enough and decided to start sleeping a bit later so I felt more rested, but my early morning meditation, journaling, etc. just fell by the wayside.
I work out with YouTube videos or Sworkit three days a week and if I get all my workouts in during the month, I’m allowed to feed my addiction to buying cute and somewhat expensive coffee mugs from Society 6. I am ashamed to say that I have only earned one coffee mug this year, but it’s a work in progress!
One thing that I HAVE been getting in every day is 15-30 minutes of German time in the morning. Gotta keep those language skills up. Usually this means reading an article from Deutsche-Welle first thing and practicing some new vocabulary – nothing fancy.
Officially, work starts at 9:00 AM, but if there are urgent things for my virtual assistance clients or I’m feeling swamped, I’ll start earlier.
My workdays are so varied! They include things like:
- Writing blog posts for clients.
- Creating social media graphics in Canva.
- Scheduling and managing over 20 social media accounts.
- Updating people’s email subscriber lists.
- Creating infographics (my new obsession!).
- Having calls with clients and prospective clients.
- My own administrative tasks – social media, bookkeeping, CRM, etc.
- Overseeing my team’s tasks in Asana.
- Working on websites – both setting up and maintaining them.
I also still do massage 4 days a week, though usually, I see only a handful of clients during the week and most of my regulars come in on Fridays. You know how people complain about Monday’s because they’re so stressful? I love Mondays, but Fridays are HECTIC. They’re the day I really feel how difficult it is to balance two businesses sometimes.
I take a break sometime between noon and 1:00 PM. That’s about the time I’m hungry and brain-fried and just need a rest. Break activities include lunch, tidying up my messy kitchen from the night before (I’m super bad at cleaning as I go), and sometimes – OK, a lot of days – a catnap on my couch with the potato (aka my pitbull). <3
After that, it’s back to the same work I did in the morning. I keep all my work to-dos in Asana and especially love their option to set up repeating tasks, as many of my clients have recurring tasks that have to be done on a weekly basis.
Between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM I stop working. I have to admit that this doesn’t always happen. Sometimes my day goes awry and I have to work until 7:00 or 8:00 at night. It happens.
I am getting better about shutting off and doing things I enjoy though. I do about 15-30 minutes of Spanish practice in the evening with Duolingo or books. Then I relax, work on my own projects (like this blog), or spend time with my husband or my sister-in-law.
Some of my favorite evening activities:
- Watching American Gods with my husband.
- Building my own websites and blogs.
- Reading letters from friends abroad.
- Playing with my pet rats.
I’m so bad about going to bed on time, but I’m trying to get better about it because I just feel better in general when I get enough sleep. Ideally, this is around 10:00 PM. I know, I’m such an old lady. My bedtime fluctuates a lot though. I sleep when I can!
That’s pretty much my day. It isn’t exceptionally exciting, but it’s fulfilling and my ever-changing workload and variety of tasks keeps work fresh from day-to-day.
